The Buzz Cut 5-17-10

Well the day finally came. Last night I buzzed my own head with a #2 guard on the clippers. It looks and feels a lot better than going through the constant irritation of having hair falling out like crazy and itching me and ending up in my mouth, eyes, neck and shoulders. I wish I had done it a day sooner. I never wanted to see my hair look patchy and that is what started to happen late yesterday. It was also really annoying to have so much coming out all the time. I don't mind the buzz cut, but I was shocked to see just how gray I was at the root level, YIKES! I guess one of my cancer blessings could be that my hair grows back some other color than gray. That's what I am hoping for anyway.

Funny story . . . On Saturday, we took Brady shopping for a swim suit at a local sporting goods store. As he was in the fitting room with Scot, I was waiting with my Mom. A large AC vent was right overhead and I could feel it blowing down on the top of my head. At first I thought, oh good, this will keep germs away from me. Then I laughed and asked my Mom if I looked like a dandelion with my hair blowing off my head. She started laughing too, but said she couldn't see any hair flying off, but we moved away from the vent just in case. The very next day, Sunday when the hair was coming out like crazy, I decided to wear my wig in public for the first time. I didn't have time to shave my head before I had to leave, so I had to dry my hair with a blow dryer. This time it really did look like a dandelion. All I could do was laugh, it was so ridiculous.

I must tell you that when I shaved my head I was very tempted to leave a mohawk just long enough to take a picture of it. When else would I ever do something like that. I actually regret not doing it. I did a fairly good job of buzzing myself, but after cleaning up I noticed I missed a small area on the back side of the crown of my head. It was kind of like an Alfalfa spot, like from the black and white Our Gang tv show. Not attractive on a 39 year old woman at all. Scot helped me fix that up. I did take a self portrait of me with my buzz cut. Not sure if I want to put it online ever, but I kind of want to document each step of this process. Each step gets me closer to the end result (CURE!).

I do really love my wig and I will for sure post a photo of that, I just need to take one. The funny thing about the wig is that I wore it yesterday evening and Meg didn't even notice that it was my wig. I went to tuck her in and I said, "Are you okay with Mom wearing her wig from now on?" She said, "That's your wig!?" Also, when I left the house yesterday to take Braden to a birthday party he complained of a stomach ache. I said, "You are just stressed because your friends are going to see your Mom in a wig for the first time." He said, "You are wearing your wig?" Kudos to my hair stylist for hooking me up with a haircut that resembled the wig so closely, and to the wig makers too I suppose. We found out the Aetna denied my claim for reimbursement for my wig. It seems my wig shop was out of network! Who knew wig shops had to be in network? WHATEVER!!! I wore the wig up to the school to watch the kids take part in their rain delayed Field Day. I got several compliments on my "haircut", which was awesome. I guess it fooled some people. If we don't end up getting reimbursed, I don't regret buying it

After taking a few photos at Field Day, Mom and I took our daily walk. This time we kept it in the neighborhood and didn't get lost. On Saturday and Sunday we tried to explore nearby neighborhoods and got lost both times and ended up taking walks well over an hour. We need to start taking the Garmin navigation thing my Dad left for my Mom in case she had to drive anywhere, with us on our walks.

Yesterday evening was a bit stressful for me besides hair issues, I developed a sore at one end of my incision where my port was inserted near my left shoulder. When I first noticed it, it was a raised lump that was purple on the top. I was a little afraid that the port had leaked or that the wound had developed an infection. I switched to a strapless bra so that nothing would be rubbing on that spot. Then I went off to take Braden to the party since Scot was taking Meg to tennis. I checked on it at the party and got scared because the purple had darkened and spread out. When I got home Scot and Mom looked at it and thought it actually looked better because the swelling had gone down. I didn't want to go to the ER, because of my WBC count. Then I started to wonder if there was something about the bra I had been wearing that could have aggravated it. Sure enough, when I held the bra up there was a raised seam where the strap was sown onto itself, after being looped through the ring. I can't believe something that benign did that much damage. I guess with everything my body is going through, it wants to protest any additional irritation. I called the nurse this morning and she said as long as it doesn't swell up again, or open up, I'm okay, and to try not to let anything else touch it till it heals up. Crisis averted for now.

I continue to feel great. I am sleeping very well and I even got some pages finished in the Disney trip scrapbook I am working on. The kids are enjoying the last two weeks of school and having Grandmom around all the time. We are starting to talk about little day or weekend trips we can take this summer. We are getting excited about that. Meghan had a good time on her GS Campout, except the Friday night severe thunder storm and the fact that they had to leave early Saturday evening due to the tornado watch. She was just as happy to stay Saturday night at her friend Camryn's house down the street. A special thank you to Camryn's Mom Jennifer, who went on the GS Campout in my place, then finished out the adventure by keeping Meg overnight and the next morning.

My next "ZAPPING" is this Thursday. Hopefully the new drugs they plan to give me work better than the last and I don't get sick at all. Stay connected for an update.
